Overview

I redesigned All About Mosaics as a passion project to reflect on my growth as a designer over the past year. This project builds on an earlier version of the project I created back in 2023. My goal was to create an engaging and informative platform that makes learning about mosaics easy and accessible. I focused on refining my design skills, particularly in layout, user flow, and overall experience, while working independently to ensure the site was both visually appealing and cohesive.

Tools Used:

Context

Reimagining All About Mosaics

This project began as a Web Design class midterm, where I focused on the functionality of a single webpage. The original design looked a bit dated and had some accessibility issues that needed to be addressed. For the redesign, I wanted to build on the project by imagining it as part of a museum. I designed the homepage for the Tile Museum, with the "All About Mosaics" exhibition page as a central feature.

This is the earlier version of the project.

Visual Identity

Modern Design Inspired by Tradition

The Tile Museum’s visual identity combines tradition with a modern, minimalist touch. The bold blue logo takes cues from classic tile patterns, while the fresh, bright color palette gives the site a more contemporary feel.

Key Improvements

Contextualizing AAM

Reimagining the exhibition as part of a museum pushed me to think bigger about the user experience. I considered how component pages like an exhibition page fit into the overall structure of a museum website. This approach helped me create a more cohesive experience.

More depth to content

The initial version of the “All About Mosaics” exhibition was pretty casual. For this version, I wanted to create a more professional exhibition page. I felt that adding a historical overview of mosaics would help provide more context and align with the educational goals of a museum. So, for this iteration, I made a section on the history of mosaics, giving visitors a better understanding of where they came from and how they’ve evolved, making the page more suitable for an exhibition.

Easier Navigation

I simplified the navigation by organizing content into clear categories, making it easier for users to find what they needed. To help users stay oriented, I added indicators like underlines to show which subpage of the exhibition they were on. These changes made the site more intuitive and accessible, allowing for a smoother user experience.

Reflections

All About Mosaics … one year later

Growth

Returning to this project after a year was an eye-opening experience. The redesign gave me a chance to apply new skills and a fresh perspective on design. Over the past year, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of how people engage with websites. Things like font readability, color contrast, and user flow became key focuses. It was rewarding to take what I’ve learned and transform the project into a more thoughtful and user-centered design. Looking back, I’m genuinely excited to see how much I’ve grown and how my skills have evolved over the year. It feels amazing to realize how far I’ve come and how much more I’m capable of.

Pushing the Boundaries of Engagement

This project showed me there’s still a lot I want to learn. I’d love to explore how things like motion design, virtual galleries, and interactive features can make a website more engaging. I’m excited to experiment with these tools in the future to create even more interesting and immersive online experiences.
